«Exchanging books is a way to make people read»

taberna cierbanata entrevista cortes castro urdiales

Jose Ignacio Cortes is the owner of one of those great places where locals and tourist get together. A exceptional restaurant where you always leave satisfied and clients and friends always come back. La Cierbanata is located in la Correria Street, a crowed passageway in the historic downtown of Castro Urdiales. The building is a unique piece of art bordered with a gallery of arcs just in front of of the harbor.

In la Cierbanata you can listen charming music, taste exquisite “pinchos” and have a good drink. Also, in la Cierbanata you can exchange a book, read and make friends through the reading.

- How did the story start?

- I started with a small shelf to let my friends leave their books. Later it became full with 25 books, so I decided to put another one. Clients started to use them while they were drinking or having something to ear.

- Then you found a great idea...

-Yes. Issues exchange is a good way to make everyone get closer to reading.

-But, how does it work?

-It's pretty simple. You want it, you take it, leaving one book of your own in the shelves. If you don't have one you can take one while you're at the bar, returning it later.

- Do people respect the rules?

- Yeah. Actually last week we had a guy who took one away without leaving one. Later on he came to donate 250 books he had at home.

- With such an amount of contributions you probably will have to enlarge the place and put even more shelves.

- No, no (he laughs). I've put seven of them and I'm not going to add more.

- So, what will you do with so many books?

- The truth is that I've lost the number of books, so that from this point I'm going to be more strict with the selection.

- And why do you think people do not want them at home?

- I think a book not being read and covered by dust at home is useless.

- It is allowed to re-read?

- Yes, but it's better to leave the book in place so others may enjoy it later on.

- Excuse me, are there books for children?

- Of course. I give them away as a gift. I've given lots from "Barco de Vapor", Julio Verne, Emilio Salgaria... classics.

-That's a way to encourage reading.

- Yes. And this autumn I'm going to set up a contest for the youngest clients.
